Fort Lauderdale, FL – July 21, 2009 – Flamenco in the Sun expands its event offerings with a unique gallery “Meet the Artists” presentation sponsored by Riverwalk A & E and the Fort Lauderdale History Center. This will be a week-long event with an exhibit open daily from July 28th to August 2nd from Noon to 4:00 PM and with the highlight being the “Meet the Artists” cocktail reception on July 30th featuring photographer Tom Tracy plus the stories of Flamenco dancers, Luisita Sevilla and Adela Green as told through their costumes and photographs on Thursday July 30th from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the new River Inn, 219 SW 2nd Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale. The event is free and open to the public.
“Luisita Sevilla brings these photos to life with her commentary and background anecdotes as she traces her career through costumes, mementos and pictures as only a protagonist can do,” stated Ms. Damaris Ferrer, co-creator of the festival and artistic director of Flamenco in the Sun.
The featured photographer, Thomas Tracy, is a photographer-journalist and graduate of the Missouri Journalism School/University of Missouri, (home of the Pictures of the Year International event) with 25 years experience in photography and well over 100 Florida major weddings in recent years. He has lived in Palm Beach County since 1992, and his photographic recording of Flamenco life will be on exhibit at the Flamenco Imagery Yesterday & Today event and during the weeklong exhibition.
The exhibit includes both black & white and color 11” x 14” prints. The images, both in film and digital, were selected from a period of five years beginning with Mr. Tracy’s first trip to Spain, to the Feria de Sevilla in 2002 and his explorations of some of the Flamenco places and schools of old Seville. Domestically, the exhibit includes images from Flamenco tablaos on Miami’s Calle Ocho, local performances, and some past Flamenco in the Sun events.
The Flamenco in the Sun festival lineup, which runs from July 23rd through August 2nd, brings three dance concerts, a kick off reception with a highly impacting documentary, an opportunity to be guest chef at a top local restaurant featuring Spanish foods, and the Flamenco Imagery event plus music and dance weeklong workshops for children and adults. Headliner artists are nationally and internationally acclaimed performers and include: Juan Carlos Lérida (Seville), Nélida Tirado (New York), José Luís Rodríguez (Seville & Cueta).
“This festival has continued to grow in the seven years we have been presenting it in South Florida. With the generous support of The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and Riverwalk A & E, we are seeing the realization of our goal which is to make Flamenco in the Sun the top cultural event of the summer in South Florida and perhaps the biggest Flamenco festival on the East Coast,” indicated Ms. Niurca Marquez, co-creator of the festival and Director International Programs and Artist Exchanges.
Flamenco in the Sun 2009 events are funded in part by the Broward Board of County Commissioners and the Broward Cultural Affairs Council; the Southern Arts Federation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts; and the State of Florida Arts Council.
