Welcome to Flamenco in the Sun 2007. Now in its fifth year, Flamenco in the Sun 2007 brings a variety of events and classes that are sure to delight our audiences.  The Festival will open with our first ever Opening Night Gala featuring Carmela Greco (Madrid), Nelida Tirado (New York), and José Luís Rodríguez (Seville) among others. The program will be presented at the Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale.

Back by popular demand, the Festival will also include a night of Café Cantante featuring local Flamenco artists at the Parker Playhouse.  This year, we welcome the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood that has joined our consortium of presenters and will host screenings of Flamenco films -- free and open to the public.

We will then return to the Parker Playhouse for a very special program that is the culmination of a four-year artistic collaboration with resident musical director, José Luís Rodríguez,  in the production of Alfonsina, La Mujer en el Mar. This flamenco ballet, based on the work of recognized Argentinean poet Alfonsina Storni, deals with the most basic human emotions of love and loss.  The story is told through an innovative blend of musical and dance styles using some of her best known poems set to original compositions by Rodriguez.  The program will feature renowned Cuban singer Gema Corredera and percussionist Fernando Favier.

This year, we continue our ongoing collaboration with the Broward Center for the Performing Arts bringing you a week of exciting master classes by Carmela Greco, Nelida Tirado, Fernando Favier and José Luís Rodríguez, along with other guest maestros.  We will once again present our week-long children’s program and adult Introduction to Flamenco workshop at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and, as in the past two years, we will continue offering scholarships to worthy students to attend the workshops.  More information is available on our registration page.

As always, this program would not be possible without our many sponsors.  This year’s program is brought to you, in part, by: the University Center for the Performing Arts, Funding Arts Broward, Broward Cultural Affairs Council, Esmeralda Farms, and the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. Through their continued commitment to the arts in South Florida we are able to bring you Flamenco in the Sun 2007 and the premiere of Alfonsina, la Mujer en el Mar.  This year’s program is a testament to our ongoing growth and commitment to bringing contemporary and innovative Flamenco of the highest caliber to the South Florida region.

Join us for an unforgettable year!
